The Clifton Expedition Hotel

University Project

Identity • Strategy • Branding

My Process

Brief

Create a full brand identity  for a hotel based anywhere in England.

Insight

The location I selected was used during World War II and dug up by soldiers, the war patch they would wear looks very similar to an entrance to a cave, linking the history of the hotel to the underground location.

Solution

Use the symbol of the war patch as the logo to tie in both the history and underground theme of the hotel.

The History

The Clifton Rocks Railway has a fascinating history as an underground funicular railway that was later used as a secret communications centre during World War II. This makes it a unique and historically significant destination.

FIND YOUR INNER
EXPLORER

This is a rebranding that blends history with adventure. Inspired by Bristol's underground tunnels from World War II, the logo reflects both the historical significance and the hotel’s adventurous spirit. Using a war patch symbol, the design connects the past with the present, representing exploration and discovery.

The Logo Mark

This symbol was taken from the WW II patch of soldiers who would dig tunnels during the war. This has historical links to the hotel because of how the railroad was used to transport and store artillery for soldiers. I have also chosen this symbol because of how versatile the imagery of the symbol is, it can represent a roof to stay under and it can represent the entrance to a cave. It has a worn away look to it just like the text to emphasize the idea of adventure as a core part of the brand.

The Colour Scheme

These colors were drawn directly from the natural tones found in underground caves, capturing their richness and depth. I carefully adjusted the vibrancy of each hue to create a refined, upscale palette, aligning with the hotel's luxurious aesthetic while maintaining a sense of organic inspiration.
